Antonio da Silva's Story

Antonio da Silva Mello, 88, beloved husband of 61 years of the late Maria de Lourdes Rocha Conde Mello, died Thursday, August 17, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Born and raised in Graciosa, Azores, he was the son of the late Manuel Correia de Mello and Idalina Do Rosario da Gloria.
Before coming to the United States, Antonio was an instructor at the Maritime school in Terceira, Azores. He then became an officer (Cabo de Mar) in the Maritime Police of the Portuguese Navy on the island of Sao Jorge, Azores. His career was a testament to his love of the ocean. He loved the sea and his students.
Mr. Mello immigrated to the United States in 1966, settling in Peabody before the ocean views of Beverly called him here in 1975, where he has since resided. Antonio worked as a machinist for Walbar in Peabody until the time of his retirement at the age of 60 in 1989.
He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society in Peabody. Antonio was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who's caring nature and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving him are two daughters, Maria Filomena Mello Alves and her husband, Joao of O’Porto, Portugal and Elizabeth Mello Stott and her husband, Wayne of Beverly; six grandchildren, Filipa, Beatriz and Claudia Santos, Emily, Harrison and Caroline Stott; and two great-grandchildren, Matilde and Manuel.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot Street, Beverly, Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial in the Central Cemetery, Beverly.
