Anthony Metaxatos, 94, of Peabody, died peacefully in his home on Friday morning. He was the devoted husband of Claire (Nelson) (McNeill) Metaxatos with whom he shared over 47 years of marriage.
Born in Danvers, he was the son of the late Harry and Anastasia (Vourrias) Metaxatos. He was raised and educated in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1938.
Anthony was a veteran of World War II who served with the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in June of 1946
Upon his discharge from the military, Anthony attended New England Aircraft School. He was employed at General Electric in Lynn for many years before retiring.
Anthony loved swimming and while in the Navy he served as a life guard. He continued swimming throughout his life until age 93. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Patriots and Red Sox. He loved gardening, traveling with his wife (46 cruises in all) and was an animal lover.
Besides his loving wife of 47 years, he is survived by his daughters, Tina Bartnett of Hampton, N.H., and Antoinette Metaxatos of Lowell, his son, Louis Metaxatos of California; his two stepsons, Malcolm McNeill of Durham, N.H. and Dwight McNeill of Little Compton, R.I.; his stepdaughter Cynthia Waldron of Acton, and he was the very proud Papou of seven grandchildren and seven great-grandsons.
Visiting hours will be held this Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Brooksby Village, 300 Brooksby Village Dr, in the Catering Room at the Macintosh Building.
