Alfred J.'s Story
Alfred J. Birch, 98, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 26, 2017. He was born in Lawrence on March 28, 1918, to Anna and Walter Brzozowski. Al was raised in Salem and was a 1936 graduate of Salem High School. He was a proud veteran of WWII. He was a member of Amaral-Bailey Post 113, the American Legion in Manchester. He was graduate of a Pennsylvania college. He married Jennie Lebroda (predeceased) of Manchester on January 3, 1943, and relocated to Manchester.
He was employed as an electronic technician at Sylvania for 17 years. For 26 years he was employed as a quality control specialist for the U.S. Defense Department in DCASR in Boston, for the Army, Navy, Air Force and NASA for their electronic supplies. He was a member of NARFE, Chapter 479.
Al and his wife enjoyed polka dancing with polka bands from Chicago, Michigan, Connecticut, and especially Happy Louie and Julia from Palmer, Mass. Al was an avid reader at the Manchester Public Library. He was a lifelong follower of the Boston Red Sox. In his later years, he enjoyed doing picture puzzles.
Al is survived by his caretaker daughter, Dale Birch-Geswell and her husband, Arthur J. Geswell of Manchester; daughter, Dianne Kulak and her husband, Thomas Kulak of Salem; and three granddaughters, Julia Geswell of Manchester, Tracie Diluiso of Beverly and Kellie Bogucki of Groveland. He was predeceased by son, John Birch.
His Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 62 School Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea on Friday, March 31, 2017, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea.
