Mr. William F. Helton, 88, of Danvers, beloved husband of Jean (Symington) Helton, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Ledgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation in Beverly.
Born in Connersville, Indiana, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Markert) Helton. He was raised and educated in Connersville, Indiana and was a graduate of Connersville High School. He attended college, until joining the United States Army.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army.
In the early 1950s William was visiting Washington, D.C., where he stayed at the same boarding hotel as a young professional woman working for the CIA by the name of Jean. They would fall in love and marry in 1954, a union which lasted over 62 years.
Bill was employed with the former Eastman Gelatin Company in Peabody as a purchasing agent as well as with Jordan Marsh as an auditor. He also worked with the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor for over 15 years, until the time of his retirement.
A longtime resident of the town of Danvers, William was a dedicated and active member of the Maple Street Congregational Church in Danvers. He was an avid reader, loved to travel and spend time with his family.
An active and outstanding Mason, Mr. Helton was a past Master and member of Amity-Mosaic Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Danvers. He was a past patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Danvers and was a Shriner and member of the Aleppo Shrine Temple in Wilmington. He volunteered his time as a member of the Mounted Patrol at the shrine and rode Palomino horses in many of the parades for many years. His dedication to his fraternal services was born by a love and innate willingness to help those in need. He was always there with a smile on his face and hand outstretched to lift someone up when they were down. He will be missed.
In addition to his loving wife of 62 years, William is survived by his daughter, Heidi Ushakoff and her husband, Alex of Beverly; his son, William Helton and his girlfriend, Cheri Howard of Danvers; his granddaughters, Tammi, Michelle and Kerri Helton; his great-grandchildren, Miranda and Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Catherine Starr and John, George and Robert Helton.
His funeral service will be held in the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St. (Rte 62), Danvers, Saturday, Jan. 21, at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial is private. Visiting hours prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in William’s memory to the Shriners Burns Institute, Development Office, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
