Sophie's Story

Text size

Beverly - Sophie (Clemenzi) Villanti passed from this life on January 10, 2017.
Sophie was the first born of John and Concetta (Serra) Clemenzi.
From an early age she knew her place - in the kitchen. Sophie’s renown as a cook and baker is legendary. Stepping into the house you would be greeted by the aroma of pizzelle, cream puffs, or cheesecake. Her home was a gathering place for family, friends, and friends of friends. The door was always open. When one of the sisters asked her to recommend an Italian restaurant where she could take a visitor from Italy she gave her own address.
Sophie studied nursing in Boston and did private duty nursing until her marriage. She married Dominick Villanti on August 25, 1940 and moved to the Bronx, New York where they lived until he was drafted into the army. That brought a move to Nebraska, then San Antonio, Texas. When Dom shipped out for military service overseas, Sophie returned to Beverly. Upon his safe return, they moved to Ipswich where they made their home for 17 years.
Sophie was a strong woman with a steadfast faith rooted in Roman Catholicism. She revered the clergy and relished visits from the nuns who lived across from her in St. Mary’s convent.
She is survived by a brother, Peter Clemenzi, daughters, Catherine Constantelo and her husband George, Maria Parent and her husband Dennis, and Angela Villanti as well as two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Dominick, passed on in 1987. Five of her siblings predeceased her: Emma Villanti, Mary DiGrandi, Angelo Clemenzi, John Battista Clemenzi, and Dominick Clemenzi.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Care Dimensions for their kindness and comforting service.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot Street, Beverly, Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
