Sophia's Story

MARBLEHEAD, MA - Sophia D. Mahoney, 75, passed away at North Shore Medical Center, Salem, Mass., on February 23, 2018. Sophia is survived by her beloved husband, Edward M. Mahoney of Marblehead; son Kevin E. Mahoney of Marblehead; daughter Laura M. Tassinari and her husband, James and their children, Meghan and Elyse of Bedford, Mass.; sister of Howard M. Dent III, Irene S. Dent and Paul H. Dent, all of Maryland.
Sophia was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Howard M. Dent, Jr., and Elise S. Dent of Maryland. She graduated from St. Cecilia's High School, Washington, D.C. Sophia obtained her associate degree from Immaculate Junior College in Washington, D.C., which she was attending when she met Edward Mahoney. Sophia married Edward in April of 1965, and the couple spent 52 years in marriage and love together as they raised their family. She worked as a secretary for many years. She was a member of the Marblehead Historical Society, and a guide at the Lee Mansion. Family, faith, and friends were of primary importance to Sophia. She was an active member of Star of the Sea Parish in Marblehead. She taught religious education for many years, belonged to the altar society and assisted with the Christmas fair. Sophia was an avid gardener and enjoyed taking care of her gardens. Her greatest joy came from her family, particularly the later additions of her granddaughters. Sophia and Edward wintered in Florida where they would host family and friends. They like to travel and tour which brought them to great destinations.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 1, 2018, in Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, MA at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sophia's memory may be made to Mass General / North Shore Cancer Center, 102 Endicott St., Danvers, MA 01923.
