Sonja M. Vannah

May 17, 1940 - November 29, 2018

Sonja M. Vannah Salem - Sonja (Cummings) Vannah, a longtime resident of Salem, passed away peacefully in her home on November 29, 2018, at the age of 78.
She was born in Orford, N.H., the devoted daughter of the late Vernon and Elaine (Hannaford) Cummings. Sonja is survived by her three loving children; Sharon Govoni and husband Randy of Danvers, Karen Fialka of Michigan, and Christopher Vannah of Salem, extremely dedicated to her grandchildren; Devin and Tyler Eriesian, Alison, Andrew and Steven Fialka; her siblings, Mike Cummings of Conn., and Jane Tingle of N.H.; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Sonja was the lifeline to her entire family. If you ever needed anything, you knew to go to Sonja.
Sonja retired from Danvers State Hospital in 1995 after 28 years of service, then worked part-time as a cashier at Stop and Shop in Peabody, where she was beloved by her coworkers and customers. All those who knew Sonja knew she was a die-hard Red Sox fan. She enjoyed all that the North Shore had to offer; Salem Willows, Salem Commons, Nahant Beach, all the local seafood, and don’t forget her Dunkin' Donuts.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. All other services are private.

Sharon my condolences love and prayers to you, Karen ( the Michigan daughter) Chris and your entire family on behalf of myself and our entire stoppie family that also loves her so much! Your mom was such a loving piece in my Peabody career puzzle. Your mom talked about all of you and her grandchildren all the time so much love! She was like a 2nd mom to me. Definitely a very special angel now every time I walk into the Peabody store! I could write about her and share stories forever! I'm so happy the Red Sox won the World Series this year..we love them! She would also include the Patriots so they weren't left out..I already miss seeing her with her Christmas hat on and lights! We also share...d the Avon experience and the love for our Dunkin Donuts. May peace and love somehow comfort you in the days to come. Our address is 490 Main Street Saugus please get in touch when you can! HugsRead more

Sharon, Karen and Chris,
I will always remember your mom. Sonja and I had many cups of coffee together and many good chats when you lived on Mineral St. in Ipswich. She was like a big sister to me and I will never forget her.
