Ruth's Story

Text size

Ruth Stepner, 97, died peacefully at her residence on July 3. Married to the late Irving Stepner for 72 years, she was the mother of Sharyn Levine of Westbury, New York, and Judith (Herb) Harris of Peabody. She was blessed with four grandchildren, Alyse (Joe) Edwards, Lesley Azzinaro, the late Jonathan Power, Jill(Mike) Saccoccia and five great granddaughters, Leah, Samantha, Molly, Sophia and Olivia.
As a teen, Ruth was diagnosed with macular degeneration but did not allow this eye disease to stand in her way of living a full, productive life. Unable to read sheet music she learned to play the piano by ear only; unable to read books, she would listen to them and became the main person to review them for her two book clubs.
At Temple Israel she was the first woman to stand at the bimah for a High Holy Day Honor and to be named to its Board of Directors. She served two terms as president of B'nai B'rith and participated in the annual musicals, once with a newly broken ankle.
Later in life, ten years were spent as a snowbird followed by ten years living in Florida. During that time the highlights were always when "the kids" visited. 2008 marked the return to the North Shore to be closer to her daughters.
A role model for the entire family, she leaves a legacy of determination, strength, dignity and above all else everlasting, unconditional love.
A private service will be held on Thursday, July 6, at Temple Israel Cemetery, Peabody. Services arranged by Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel.
