Peabody & Swampscott - Roy Pearson, 94, passed away peacefully at Kaplan House on Sunday, February 3rd following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his family that weekend to share final goodbyes. Roy was predeceased by Bernice (Hanson), his wife, and Laurie Jackson, his granddaughter.
Roy is survived by two daughters, Karin Jackson and her husband Dennis, of Middleton, MA and Karla Cashman of Laconia, NH; his grandchildren, Kristin Roda and her husband Bryan, of Swampscott, MA, Meredith Cashman and her fiancé, Myles Holman, of Mason, NH, Mark Cashman of Blacksburg, VA; and one great-granddaughter, Paige Roda of Swampscott, MA. He also leaves one sister and many nieces and nephews.
Roy was born and raised in Saugus, the fifth of seven children. He graduated from Saugus High School and entered the Navy to serve with distinction in World War II as a gunner in convoys in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return from the war he met and married Bernice (Hanson) Pearson with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Roy enjoyed a career of 42 years at General Electric, retiring as manufacturing engineer. He studied engineering at Northeastern University and was recognized by GE in 1980 with a commendation for his pioneering work with ceramics. Upon his retirement, he and Bernice enjoyed road trips, visiting every state except Alaska and Hawaii, as well as trips to Sweden to visit relatives. Their love of their grandchildren was obvious, and Roy was blessed to have a great-granddaughter to continue his legacy.
Roy lived in Swampscott for 60 years, then moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA where he enjoyed bowling, golf, pool, volunteering at the Treasure Chest, and many friendships. Most recently, he lived at Putnam Farm in Danvers, MA where he continued to enjoy his social life, visits from family and friends, and regular outings to The Village Restaurant in Essex for fried clams and a glass of wine.
A private graveside memorial service is planned for the spring. Donations in Roy’s memory will be gratefully accepted by Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, MA 01923 or the Lustgarten Foundation to support its initiatives to eliminate Pancreatic Cancer ( Condolences can be made by visiting
