SALEM- Mrs. Rita M. (Ouellette) Downing, 92, of Salem, wife of Cecil Downing, died Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Grosvenor Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Emile and Alice (McHugh) Ouellette. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1943.
Mrs. Downing had been employed as a telephone operator for New England Telephone Company in Salem for many years.
A lifelong resident of the City of Salem, Rita was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed being involved in her family's many activities, sports and theatrical dramas. She was immensely proud of their many accomplishments and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Rita was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Salem Council on Aging where she served on their Advisory Board. Rita loved to sing and was a member of the Goldentones since 1984.
Surviving Rita are her daughter, Alice Conroy of North Reading; her sons, Paul Downing and his wife Cheryl Avery of Lutz, Fla, Richard Downing and his wife Donna of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her grandchildren, Christopher Conroy and his wife Jenn, Sarah Stablewski and her husband, Todd, Carolyn Costantino and her husband, Dante, Brian Downing, Mark Downing and his wife, Jessica, Jillian Downing, Jennifer Corbin, Nicole Puz and her husband, Jeremy and Michelle Downing, her 12 great-grandchildren, her daughter-in-law, Andrea Downing and foster daughter, Betty Nickerson and her husband, Don and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Robert Downing.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral Mass will be held in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem on Monday, January 29th at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial will be private.
