Patricia M.'s Story

Text size

Patricia M. (Pym) Johnston, 79, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 25, 2017. She was the wife of the late Paul D. Johnston with whom she shared 52 years of marriage.
Born in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late Harold S. Pym and Rosamond (Patch) Pym.
Patricia, also known as Pat or Patsy, was a graduate of the Topsfield High School, Class of 1957. She went on to graduate from the Westbrook Junior College, Westbrook, Maine with a degree in early childhood education. Pat then went on to work at the William Coolidge Estate in Topsfield.
Upon marrying her husband Paul in 1962, Pat moved to Paul’s beloved Marblehead where she went on to raise two sons and at different times worked for the Marblehead school system. Pat was a dedicated wife and mother who spent much time supporting her family and sons’ involvement with various youth sports and scouting. In particular, and along with her husband, she supported her sons’ years-long membership with Troop 11, Boy Scouts of America, and along the way made many friends through that long association. Pat very much enjoyed interacting with family, friends, and neighbors.
In her youth, Pat was an avid horse rider and occasionally accompanied her father and the family hound(s) on drag scent hunts.
Pat also enjoyed sailing with her family on summer weekend days. After her sons moved out on their own, she enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband over many years. Pat was the typical avid Boston sports fan. Her last prominent sports memory was the Patriots amazing come from behind Super Bowl victory earlier this month. Having suspected herself of actually being bad luck for the Patriots on occasion, her sons were convinced that she must have shut the game off early in the third quarter, thus allowing the Patriots to stage that thrilling comeback. As it turned out, she did indeed watch the entire game and the years of suspicion of being bad luck were finally washed away. Pat had an amazing sense of humor and great laugh when you got her going, and she took all kidding in stride. First and foremost though, she will be most remembered as a loving, dedicated, and doting wife, mother, and grandmother.
Pat is survived by her two sons and three grandchildren, Norman Johnston and his wife, Nell (Moore) and their two sons, Aidan and Ryan of Shrewsbury, and Major Donald Johnston, USAF (retired) and his wife, Diana and their daughter, Kristen of San Antonio, Texas. She is the sister of Margaret Whittier of Ipswich. Pat also leaves several nephews and nieces, and many extended family members. We know Pat would want her express her deepest sincere thanks, as do her sons, to her awesome neighbors, family helpers, and family members who assisted her in recent years when she needed it.
A memorial service will be held at a future date and that announcement will be forth coming. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Pat’s memory be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
