ESSEX - Patricia Claire (Gabry) Carter, 82 wife of Richard C. Carter of Apple Street, died Sunday, January 7, 2018 in the Hunt Rehabilitation Center in Danvers.
Pat was born in Gloucester on October 27, 1935, the only beautiful child of the late Chester E. Gabry, a stone mason, and his wife the late Beatrice Vera (Roberts) Gabry of West Gloucester. Pat was a bright, funny, sociable, head?strong girl who loved animals, nature, music, stylish clothes and her myriad aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. As a girl, she ice?skated (inspired by one of her idols, Sonja Hennie), played some piano, sang popular music with a few of her Gloucester school friends, and took swimming, dance and horseback riding lessons. She adored being out in the sun and the beach in the summer. She was a highly energetic person and always enjoyed staying physically active. Following her 1953 graduation from Gloucester High School, she went on to complete a secretarial program at the Chandler School for Women in 1954. After Chandler, Pat worked as a secretary at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Boston and also waitressed at her uncle Chubby Woodman's Diner in Essex, which is where she met her husband, Richard of Essex.
After raising three children, she studied landscape architecture at Essex Aggie. Later, she delivered the mail for the town of Rowley, eventually working in the Essex Post Office and rising to the rank of Postmaster of the South Hamilton Post Office, a role she dearly enjoyed for many years. After retiring from the post office, Pat launched into refinishing wooden furniture and selling antiques in her own shop in downtown Essex. In her spare time, she served as a volunteer at Beverly Hospital.
In addition to her loving husband of 61 and half years she is survived by her two daughters, Terri P. McLaughlin and her husband, David of Florida and Laurel J. Nicholas and her husband, Thomas of Essex; a son, Keith Carter and his wife Sheila of Essex, and seven grandchildren, Kevin, Craig, and Melanie Carter and Jacqueline, Victoria, Alexandria, and Catherine Nicholas, all of Essex.
Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich followed by interment in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday. Following burial there will be a memorial reception held at the Manchester American Legion, 14 Church Street Manchester MA 01944.
