Nancy Marie Sheehy

January 03, 1948 - February 27, 2019

Nancy Marie Sheehy South Yarmouth, MA - Nancy Marie Sheehy, 71, of South Yarmouth, Nantucket and Salem, Mass. died on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, after a yearlong battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
She was born to the late Philip and Anne Alberta (Hamilton) Sheehy on January 3, 1948, in Salem where she lived the majority of her life.
A 1966 graduate of Salem High School, she majored in early childhood education at Vermont College and music at Boston University. She taught for many years at the Center School in Peabody before becoming the Director of The Little Red School House in Lynn. In 1993 she moved to Nantucket where she was the Director of Small Friends of Nantucket until 2000 when she joined the Cyrus Pierce Middle School as a science teacher. Upon her retirement in 2015 Nancy moved to the Cape and continued her love of education working as a substitute teacher for the Dennis Yarmouth School District.
An accomplished pianist, she would often incorporate music into her lesson plans to the delight of her students. It was not unusual to hear her class performing rap songs during a science lab. She volunteered countless hours playing the piano at Our Island Home in Nantucket bringing joy and evoking memories to the elderly residents there.
She is survived by her son, Daniel, (Amy MacEachern) and granddaughter Madeline, her daughter Emily (Adam Sherman) and granddaughter Molly and grandson Toby, and her son T.J. (Naomi Richard Harnishfeger) and grandson Travers.
She also leaves her sister, Debbie (Kimbrough Dilworth), nieces Ashley and Taryn Dilworth, great niece Eva and great nephew Logan.

Burial will be private. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Nancy's life on Saturday, March 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Faregrounds Restaurant on Nantucket Island.

It certainly sounds like a life well lived, full of giving, love and passion. I'm sorry for this loss to her family and I suspect Nancy left many wonderful memories behind to chase away sadness. She was a thoughtful and caring classmate at Salem High.

Nancy was a childhood friend and neighbor of ours in the Willows. We have fond memories of her as she was a friend of my sister. While in Nantucket last summer, Helena and I were dinning in a beautiful harbor side restaurant and when our waitress asked where we we from, I mentioned Salem and Marblehead...to our surprise she told us that she was Nancy's niece. We spoke for a while and she brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood and Nancy. Nancy was a really happy woman and touched many lives, including mine. I want her family to know that I care.
