Beverly - Mr. Michael Robert Gilligan Sr., 81, of Beverly, beloved husband of Eileen R. (Corry) Gilligan passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2019, with his family by his side.
Born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mary (Fagan) Gilligan. Raised and educated in Ireland, he attended the Christian Brothers School where he received his education.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Michael never forgot where he came from as he relocated to the United States to better his life. First living in the Bronx, New York; Michael met the love of his life Eileen at Schrafft's Chocolates where they both worked.
Dedicated to provide for his family, Michael and Eileen relocated to Massachusetts where he continued his education at Essex Agricultural School in Danvers focusing on his love for gardening, flowers and agriculture. As a natural born caretaker, Michael managed the grounds of a farm in Boxford, Mass., and worked in the industrial maintenance industry throughout the North Shore; most recently at Endicott College and St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Beverly.
Michael was an avid sports fan, first starting his love of hurling and then baseball with the New York Yankees, later learning that New England sports would steal his heart. He became a loyal Red Sox fan, religiously watching each game and was a big fan of New England's pride and joy, Tom Brady. He loved the outdoors, had a natural green thumb and was meticulous with his gardening work. Michael was also a gifted musician, talented in playing the harmonica, accordion, spoons and drums. Above all else, Michael was loyal and loved his family endlessly. He will be deeply missed by his devoted family and friends.
In addition to his wife Eileen, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage; Michael is survived by his daughters, Mary B. Gilligan of Peabody and Bernadette P. Gilligan of Beverly; his son, Michael R. Gilligan Jr. and his wife Nicole of Newmarket, N.H.; his grandchildren, Allen Delisle of Beverly, Richard LeBlanc of Salisbury, Sarah LeBlanc of Brentwood, N.H., Roisin A. Gilligan of Haverhill and Michael R. Gilligan III of Newmarket, N.H.; his one great-granddaughter Lilyann Delisle; his sisters, Bernadette Keane and Patricia McKernan, both of Ireland; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late, David, John, Gerald, Frederick, Peggy, Anne, and Lilly.
