Michael's Story

Text size

After his heroic battle with the great dragon (cancer), Michael Dewey Duffy, 58, of Farragut, Tenn., stepped boldly into the light on December 3, 2017, leaving a tremendous hole in the world and in the lives of those left behind. Michael was born in Beverly, Mass., on December 28, 1958, to mother, Sandra Ann (Dawson) Duffy, and father, James Joseph "Jimmy" Duffy Jr. He was a 1977 graduate of Masconomet High School, Boxford, Mass., and 1981 graduate of the University of Maine (Orono). Michael's lifelong career in explosives sales began in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1981, with his mentor, Michael Rupert. This career took him briefly to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Pittsburgh, Pa., before returning to Knoxville in 1986. In Knoxville, Michael was adopted by his second, "southern" family, southern dad, Gordon Rome "GR"; mom, Betty; and sisters, Regina and Susan. Michael married Kyra Johnson Donnell on November 10, 2007, completing his life's desire for a family of his own as he eagerly folded Kyra's son, Travis Raymond Donnell, and daughter, Taylor Brittany Donnell, into his strong and shielding arms. Though golf, boating, yardwork, University of Tennessee and Patriot football, and the Boston Red Sox were beloved, Michael's greatest joy was neither in places or things. His joy, the light in his eyes and the broad smile on his face were born from family and the people in his life. Michael was a collector of hearts and every heart he touched became a part of his ever expanding circle of lifelong friends. Michael was preceded by his father, Jimmy, and loyal companions Spice, Max, Bogey, and Gizmo. He is survived by his bride, Kyra; son, Travis; and daughter, Taylor; his mother, Sandra; his sister, Karen Ann (Duffy) Munroe and her husband, Joseph Munroe; his sister, Patricia Ann (Duffy) Koniares and her husband, Harry Koniares; his brother, John David Duffy; and nephew, Jonathan Michael Duffy; and four-legged family, Mojo, Sugah, and Liberty. He will be so dearly missed by so very many, and never forgotten by his TTT, Fox Den, All Saints, and DynoNobel families, and especially by his brothers from different mothers: Joe, Sam, David, JD, ET, Phil, John, Chris, Double-D, Tony, R, and all the rest; lady friends and admirers too many to count; and his grasshoppers, big and small: Brian, princess Isabelle, Madison, Lauren, Mattie, Kelly, Aaron, Ashley, Tucker, Tanner, Ollie, Hunter, Aden, and Krissy.
Arrangements: A time of quiet prayer is offered at All Saints Catholic Church, 620 N. Cedar Bluff Road, Knoxville, TN, on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by Funeral Mass at 5 p.m. A Celebration of a Life Well-Lived will be scheduled in Michael's honor at a later time.
