BEVERLY - Merle E. "Kip" Welsh Jr., age 90, of Beverly, formerly of Wenham, died Friday morning February 9, 2018, at Kaplan Family Hospice House, in Danvers, after a brief illness. Husband of the late Helene (O'Day) Welsh. Born in Warren, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Merle E. and Clara (Sartori) Welsh Sr.
He was an honorably discharged veteran during World War II. During his service in the U.S. Army, he was one of the Monuments Men.
He earned his undergraduate degree at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, his master's degree at Penn State University, and his doctorate of education at Syracuse University.
He worked for the Williamsville Central School District in Williamsville, New York, for 27 years, as Director of Curriculum, and then Assistant Superintendent. He retired in 1992, and moved to Wenham in 1993 to be near his beloved grandchildren.
He was a volunteer for the Wenham Council on Aging and the Hamilton-Wenham Library, in honor of his wife, who was a librarian.
Surviving him are his daughter, Susan Johnson, and her husband, Douglas, of Haverhill; his son, Christopher Welsh, and his wife, Marla, of Cartersville, Ga.; his grandchildren, Nicholas, and Laura Johnson, and Andrea Welsh. He was predeceased by a brother, William Welsh, and his sisters, Joanne, and Joyce Welsh.
His level head, patience, wisdom, and great love of his family, were his gifts to us, and we will all miss him terribly. Rest easy Dad. We love you.
His funeral services will be held privately. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915.
