Peabody - Mrs. Mary M. (Johnson) Gunning 98 of Peabody, wife of the late John J. Gunning, died Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Jeanne Jugan Residence in Somerville.
Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Ella M. (Casey) Johnson. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s Girls School in Salem.
Mrs. Gunning began her professional career with the former Rogers Jewelry Store of Salem, as a book keeper and collections specialist. She worked in the accounting department of G.T.E. Sylvania at it’s Endicott St., Danvers location for many years until the time of her retirement.
A long-time resident of the City of Peabody, Mary was a faithful devoted communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. She was a member of the quarter Century Club at Sylvania. Mary had a quick wit and wry sense of humor. She loved to laugh and was a straight shooter. She had a passion for Ballroom dance and even met her beloved husband at a local Ballroom dance; they were then and furthermore, forever partners. She enjoyed travel and her family meant the world to her.
Mary is survived by many nieces and nephews, including the Murphy, Barto, Walsh, Gunning and Lang Families. She was the sister of the late Dorothy Johnson, Arthur Johnson and Bro. Francis P. Johnson, C.S.C and sister-in-law of the late Eleanor Johnson, Mary Walsh, Margaret Murphy and Francis, Frederick, James and Thomas Gunning.
Her funeral will be held from The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (At Salem Common) Salem, Saturday, Dec. 15th at 10 a.m. followed by her funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited.
