Maria F. (Melo)'s Story
Maria F. (Melo) Bettencourt, 66, of Peabody died peacefully Saturday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers with her family at her side. She was the devoted wife of the late Eutimio Bettencourt and the loving mother of the late Bobby Bettencourt. She was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, on October 21, 1951, the daughter of the late Bernardino C. and Germina A. (Bettencourt) Melo, and had resided there before emigrating to Peabody in 1969. Maria was employed with the Osram Sylvania Co., at the Danvers plant for 20 years prior to her retirement in 1998. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Our Lady of Help Society, and the Azorian Brotherhood of the Holy Ghost Society, all of Peabody. Maria enjoyed cooking her favorite recipes and working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She is survived by her brothers and their spouses, Valter and Soazinha Melo of Peabody, Carlos and Libramento Melo of Portugal, and Carlos and Maria Santos of Groveland, Mass.; her sisters and spouses, Ana and Manuel Ortins of Toronto, Canada, and Natal and Eurico Silva of Graciosa, Portugal; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
A Visitation will be held on Monday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody, facility. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Walsh Avenue, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
