Lydia's Story

Text size

BEVERLY, MA - Whether you knew her as Lydia or Auntie or Mrs. Mentus, you knew that she had a style that was all her own; always with her hair in place, accessorizing outfits with scarves and belts.
She loved to soak up the sun; on the beach at Salem Willows when she and her beloved Donald lived in Danvers, and later on the beach in Nantucket Sound, when they moved to Cape Cod after Donald's retirement from Eastman Gelatin in Peabody.
She had a knack for finding a special gift, sending a note or card, or creating floral arrangements for special events. She learned to weave beautiful Nantucket baskets that became lamps, trays and end tables. She had been a member of the Allen Harbor Yacht Club, held season tickets to the Cape Playhouse for over 30 years and friend of the Dennis Harwich Lions Club.
Always a dog-lover, she adored her dachshunds, Kurt and Katrina, and later cared fondly for her nieces' dogs, KC and Kip.
Lydia was predeceased by her husband, Donald; her parents, Nikita and Anastasia Mitulinsky; and her sister, Nina Grayton. She is survived by her nieces, Deanna (Paula Heinz) Grayton of Danvers, Mass., and Lisa (Chip) Cohan of Tiburon, Calif; and nephew, Philip (Elena) Grayton of Wenham, Mass.; grandnieces, Christine and Vlada Grayton and Katya Grayton-Heinz; and grandnephews, Christopher, Patrick and Sean Cohan and Matthew Grayton; and many cousins and friends.
A service will be held on Friday, February 9, at 1:30 p.m. at Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main St., Harwich Center. Burial will follow at Island Pond Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dennis Harwich Lions Club, 76 Chase Ave., Dennis Port, MA 02639; Landmark at Oceanview, 3 Essex St., Beverly, MA 01915; or Beacon Hospice, 100 Cummings Center, #222C, Beverly, MA 01915.
