Leo J.'s Story

Leo J. Gagnon, 88, died peacefully on Saturday morning, May 20, 2017, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, while in the comforting presence of his family.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Omer and Marie (Jalbert) Gagnon, Sr. He grew up and lived most of his life in Salem.

He worked as a laborer with Sylvania in Salem before enlisting in the United States Navy, through which he proudly served on the U.S.S. Midway during World War II.

Mr. Gagnon was a hardworking man and creatively gifted in solving manufacturing issues. He worked for A.C. Lawrence Leather in Peabody. He held a couple of jobs at once, including furniture deliveries for Titus Furniture of Salem and doing painting, wall paper, or handyman odd jobs for others.

Leo was active at Ste. Anne’s Church in Salem from the time he was a child. He was always generous with his time and helping when others needed. He had a good sense of humor and will be remembered as a giving person. He also helped out the Sheriff’s Department as a guard at Salem Jail.

He is survived by a son and a daughter, Ronald J. Gagnon of Beverly and Deborah J. and her husband, Nicholas Marotta of Churchton, Md., and the late Norman L. Gagnon, who lived in Gloucester; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister, Andre Gagnon and Roger Gagnon, both of Salem, and Yvonne Cleve of Newport, N.C. He was the former husband of Jeannette (Wilson) (Gagnon) Kearley of Md., and he leaves many nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Omer, Elie, Napoleon, Henry, Robert, and Roland Gagnon.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a visitation on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Ste. Anne’s Church, Salem. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice or support a veteran’s group.
