SALEM - Mr. Joseph Anthony Salvo 80, of Salem, beloved husband of Anne Irene (Pelletier) Salvo, died Monday, December 4, 2017 at Salem Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Stephen and Carmelina (D'Iorio) Salvo. He was raised and educated in Salem and attended the former St. James high School. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army. As a young man, Joseph worked at the newsstand in downtown Salem for many years prior to attending Barber School. Mr. Salvo was the founder and proprietor of the former Pal Joey's Barber Shop on Main Street in Peabody for many years. He then went on to work for the City of Salem, Shade Tree Department as a tree trimmer until the time of his retirement in 1998. Joey was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved his family deeply. He was a long-time member of the Christopher Columbus Society in Salem and enjoyed spending his time gardening and bird watching. He was a great story teller and often would hold court telling fabulous tales to entertain all. He had a deep passion for animals and would often arrive home with a new canine companion in tow. Yet above all else family was paramount. He will be deeply missed. Joey is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Anne Irene (Pelletier) Salvo of Salem; his daughters, Christina Thomas of Beverly and Linda Wilson and her husband Kenneth of Salem, his grandchildren, Tanya and Stephen Thomas, Matthew Wilson, Alex Thomas and Samantha Scalfani; his great grandchildren, Whom he affectionately referred to as the great ones, Christa Stewart and Anthony Thomas and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Joanna Scalfani and brother of the late Robert Salvo.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in The O'Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, Friday, Dec. 8th at 6 p.m. Relatives and friends invited.
