John M. "Jethro"'s Story
John M. Phelps, 62, husband of Maureen (Manson) Phelps, passed away after a five month battle with leukemia on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington.
He was the son of the late Charles and Katherine (Murray) Phelps.
He was raised and educated in Salem, where he graduated from Salem High School in 1972.
Jethro was employed as a chef at multiple restaurants on the North Shore early in his career. He then later became the owner and operator of Jethro’s Mobile Food Unit in front of the Vittori-Rocci Post for over 20 years, where he was known for his “last hot dog before Route 128.”
He loved cooking, the ocean and his dogs. He was a longtime member of the Vittori-Rocci Post, where he enjoyed spending time with friends watching sports, especially the Red Sox, Patriots, and golf. He was also a member of the ICC.
Jethro is survived by his loving wife, Maureen (Mo) with whom he just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary in May. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Sue Khoury and her life partner, Jim Tylman of Harvest, Ala.; his sisters-in-law and their spouses, Nancy and David Grant, Diane and Bob Pitman of Beverly, Mass.; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 13, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA 01915.
