John F. Giza

Ipswich - John F. Giza, Jr., 89, the beloved husband of the late Marguerite Ann (Calnan) Giza, died Friday following a brief illness. Born in Old Saybrook, Conn., son of the late John F. and Mary (Pelka) Giza, he was raised in Deep River, Conn., with a passion for baseball and the outdoors that would be his underpinning for the rest of his life. John served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and after returning home to Deep River, he eventually made his way to Ipswich to settle down and raise two families. After his first wife Mary died, survived by her son Steven, John remarried Marguerite with five children, a task a man of lesser character and strength would not have undertaken. The home was lively and bustling with energy for many years as John not only built a strong family but also a successful masonry business. He was known to many in the community as a very hard worker and loyal to his business associates and clients. As he did as a youth, John continued to be active in sports, coaching, umpiring, and playing softball. An avid N.Y. Giants fan, he was always ready for a quip or two about the triumph of the Giants in the Super Bowl, not once but twice over the local home team (not to be named). Even up to the end, John was able to tend to his garden daily and just a month earlier make the early morning boat for a deep-sea fishing adventure with a few of his closest friends.
He is survived by six children, Rev. Robin DeAngelis and her partner John LaBolt of Fla., Dawn DeAngelis and her husband Richard Jeffrey of Lee, N.H., Robert A. DeAngelis and his wife Patricia of Boston, Cori Trembowicz of Essex, Steven M. Giza and his partner Lily Marshall of Seabrook, N.H., and Stefanie Macklin and her husband Mark of Ipswich; 15 grandchildren, Alyson Messner, Lindsay Slate, Hunter and Emily LaBolt, Adam and Thomas Jeffrey, Sarah, Katherine and Austin DeAngelis, Alan John and Christopher Lemire, Zachary Trembowicz, Chesley, Hannah and Jack Macklin; and six great-grandchildren, Liam, Spencer and Lucy Slate, Tamzin, Charlize and Hanley Lemire. He was the younger brother of the late Francis, Joseph, Rose and Jean.
His funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by interment with military honors in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and close friends are respectfully welcomed. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at 10 Vermette Court, Ipswich, MA, after the interment service. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to SeniorCare, Inc. of Gloucester at www.seniorcareinc.org/donate-2/. For directions and/or to leave a condolence, please visit www.whittier-porter.com.
