BEVERLY - Joan Ellen Cole, 87, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, March 9, 2018, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House.
Joan was born September 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Morgan and Nellie (Field) Cole. She was a graduate of Beverly High School, class of 1948 and lived her entire life in Beverly, most of it in the same home in the Centerville neighborhood.
Joan had a long career as a bookkeeper for the phone company, and retired from Verizon. As a dedicated lifelong member of Centerville Christian Endeavor Church, Joan served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher and collector. She was a longtime volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels and delivered meals well into her 80s. She received great joy from her many pets including those she foster-cared. Joan loved her small garden, traveling to see her extended family, yard sales and flea markets, stock car racing and was always ready for breakfast (French toast) or lunch out. Joan lived a remarkable life full of loving compassion for others and along the way offered several people a stay in her home when they were in need.
Joan is survived by her cousin and best friend, Shirley Homan of Danvers, her lifelong friend, Evelyn Butman of Beverly and many beloved cousins.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday in the Centerville Church, 136 Standley St., Beverly at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will follow at North Beverly Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Joan's memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
