Salem - Jeannette Marie (Smith) Countie, age 79, died peacefully at home on August 8, 2019. Born Jeannette Marie Smith on July 18, 1940, the first born child of Hugh Patrick Smith and Helena (McFarland) Smith. Beloved wife of Ralph Leo Countie for 56 years; sister of Thomas E. Smith and his wife Nancy, Hugh P. Smith and his wife Nancy; and sister of Rev. Patricia S. Bade. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and numerous grand-nieces and -nephews.
Raised in Boston, she later graduated from South Portland High School where she received high honors and was a delegate to Girls State in 1956. Jeannette was a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, worked at Waltham Hospital, and did research in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
She was the vice president of the Carmel Club, where she met and married Ralph. She then returned to school to become an interior designer and restored historic homes in Salem and Marblehead. She was a devoted collector of antiques, bought and sold many at the Wenham Tea House, and through other venues on the North Shore. For a time she wrote a column on antiques for the Salem Evening News, and was an accomplished artist, loved jazz, barbershop quartet music, and enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband.
Visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St., Salem, Massachusetts, on Friday, August 16, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Catholic funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. A private interment will be at a later date. In Jeannette's memory, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
