Jane R.'s Story
Jane R. (Barter) Smith, 93, beloved wife of the late Charles E. Smith, died Friday, July 7, 2017 at Putnam Farms in Danvers.
Born and raised in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late Ralph P. and Margaret (Irving) Barter. She received her education in the Beverly school system and graduated from Beverly High School, Class of 1942.
Jane had been employed for over 20 years at Zayre’s Department Store in Beverly until the time of her retirement.
A longtime resident of Beverly before moving to Barefoot Bay, Florida 30 years ago, Jane was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Beverly and once in Florida an active participant at St. Elizabeth’s church in Sebastian, Fla. After settling in Florida, Jane and her husband, Charlie became very involved with the Barefoot Bay Lions Club and held various positions. She last served as its Vice-President. She was involved in many charitable organizations including Helping Hands and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and the American Legion. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Gromko) Zilinsky and her husband, Robert of Danvers, her son, Charles D. Smith and his wife, Linda (Collins) of Danvers; two grandchildren, David Scott Gromko and Charles Zachary Smith, three great grandchildren, Hannah Gromko, Chloe Gromko and Maxwell Gromko; her two sisters-in-law, Hilda Barter and Norma Smith and many nieces and nephews. She was also the loving mother of the late Peter E. Smith, grandmother of the late William Gromko III and sister of the late Irving, John and Peter Barter.
Her funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4 Ocean Street, Beverly, Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A visiting hour will be held at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial in the North Beverly Cemetery.
