BEVERLY - James W. Jobes, Jr., age 82, passed away at his home in Beverly on Saturday, January 27, 2018. He was born January 4, 1936, in Washington D.C., the son of James William Jobes, Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Howard. A graduate of St. John's College, Annapolis Md., in 1958, Jim earned his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Virginia in 1967.
A lifelong educator, Jim taught Greek and medieval philosophy and aesthetics at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., from 1964 until his retirement in 1996, and continued to teach part-time at various northern Arkansas colleges, including the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and Hendrix College, while his wife developed her calling to the Episcopal ministry in that area.
Jim was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Beverly.
Jim married Amy Louise Carle on June 3, 1961, in Falls Church, Va., and they raised their family in Memphis, Tenn. Jim and Amy moved to Beverly in 2004 to be near their daughter and her family. They wintered in Atlanta with their son and his family for several years. Amy passed away in August 2015.
Jim is survived by his brothers, Jackson Evans Ireland, and Jeffrey Howard Ireland of Huntington, Md.; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Jobes Hufford, and Scott Hufford, of Beverly; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. Jobes, and Elizabeth Mattke Jobes, of Gainesville, Fla; and three grandchildren, Amanda E. Hufford, Elijah C. Jobes, and Sophia J. Jobes.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 3, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4 Ocean Street, Beverly at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
