MARBLEHEAD, MA - James E. Coppola of Marblehead passed away peacefully on January 20 at the age of 94. He was the loving husband for 68 years to Lucy (Leonardi) Coppola. The son of the late Joseph and Frances Coppola, he was born in Chelsea and raised in Revere. After receiving his degree from Boston University, Mr. Coppola served as a sergeant in the US Army during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. After the War he obtained his law degree from Boston University and established a successful law practice working into his 90th year. Mr. Coppola was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Marblehead and the Knights of Columbus. He contributed his time and energy to many Church committees and functions. He loved playing cards, bowling, ocean liner cruises, the Red Sox, and the Patriots, and the warm climate of Sarasota, Fla., where he and his wife shared a winter home for 25 years. Most of all he loved the company of his wife and large family. He was a devoted father to his children, James Jr. (Janet) of Marblehead, Joseph (Nancy) of LaCrosse, Wisc., Rosemary (Edmund) of Holliston, and Thomas (Janine) of Salem; to his 17 grandchildren, John, Lauren (Thomas), David (Elizabeth), Leah, Daniel (Kathryn), Elizabeth, James, Matthew, Peter, Anna, Colleen (Philip), Claire, James, Lucie, Angela, Samantha, and Roseanna; and to his seven great-grandchildren, Emily, John, Meghan, Molly, Dennis, Hazel, and Thomas.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Route 1A), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead. Burial will follow in Star of the Sea Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
