Helene R. (Thompson)'s Story
Helene R. (Thompson) Sawyer, age 90 of Danvers, former longtime resident of Lynn, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2017 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
She was born on January 28, 1927 in Malden, the daughter of the late Milton and Sarah (Howard) Thompson. Helene was raised and educated in Malden and graduated from Malden High School. She had worked for H.P. Hood as a secretary for many years, as well as for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, where she retired from in 1986. She continued working for Cassidy Associates Insurance Agency in Swampscott until retiring in 1997. In retirement, Helene volunteered her time at Lynn and Union Hospitals. She and her husband, Elmer “Cap” Sawyer enjoyed traveling together to various magic conventions and Friendship Force, all over the world. Helene loved Christmas and getting together with family to celebrate. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Lynn and a member of the Union Hospital Auxiliary. While living at Colonial Gardens in Beverly, she was a member of the choral group. She loved singing at different events. Helene is survived by her daughters; Robin Phillips and her husband, Mark of Salem and Lisa Martins and her husband, Donald of Peabody; her sister, Beverly McMillan of Malden, her grandchildren, Nathan and Alan Phillips and Gary Martins and Paul Martins and his wife, Amy, her great-grandchildren, Cole and Logan Martins. Several nieces and nephews also survive her. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer “Cap” Sawyer, as well as her sister, Mary Osterholt and her brother, Bradley Thompson.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, 145 Boston Street in Lynn.
