Helen E. (Stavros)'s Story
Helen E. (Stavros) Markos, 88, beloved wife of the late John G. Markos, passed away in her sleep on Friday, October 20, 2017, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers. She was born in Peabody on September 2, 1929, to the late Harry and Ekaterina (Zervas) Stavros and was one of nine children.
Raised in Peabody, she was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1947. She moved to Ipswich upon her marriage where she and her husband lovingly raised their five children. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose love knew no bounds; her family was her joy. Helen led her family by example, instilling the importance of family, faith and love. Her sense of humor, dignified presence, and gracious warmth endeared her to all who knew her. She will be truly missed.
Mrs. Markos is survived by her children, son, George Markos and his wife, Jill; son, William Markos; daughter, Marlene Doyle and her husband, Richard; daughter, Kathryn Waiswilos and her husband, Scott; grandchildren, Melina, John, Markos, Alexander, Angela, Ashley, Katerina, John, Nicholas, John, William; and great-grandchildren, Kristina, Laurel, Andrew, Noah, Kevin, Thomas, Alexa, Colton and Markos; her sister, Bette Mentas; brother, George Stavros; her devoted and loving friend, Christina Malenfant; and also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Larry; and siblings, Charles Stavros, Peter Stavros, Sid Stavros, Irene Xenios, Diane Birmingham and Nicholas Stavros.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 25, at 10 a.m. at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich. Burial will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, October 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich.
