BEVERLY - Guerdon C. Davis, Jr, Ret. Beverly Fire Captain, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2018 at the Beverly Hospital. He was the husband of Jean A. (Durrell) Davis.
He was born and raised in Beverly. He was the son of the late Guerdon C. and Ruth C. (White) Davis, Sr.
Guerdon was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1944. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 where he served as a bombardier and radio gunner with Torpedo Squadrons VT43 & VT97 during World War II. During the Korean War, he served aboard the CVA-10 USS Yorktown. On being honorably discharged from the Navy, he joined the Naval Reserve and retired as a Command Master Chief (E-9) with 42 years of naval service.
Guerdon was a long-time firefighter with the City of Beverly Fire Department, retiring as Fire Captain after forty years of service. He was a member of the Beverly and Manchester Historical Societies, numerous Naval organizations including the U.S.S. Constitution Museum Foundation, and the Beverly Council on Aging.
He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, gardening, traveling, his times at the Beverly Council on Aging, and most of all his family.
Surviving him in addition to his wife is his daughter, Gale Davis Lynch and her husband, Thomas of Danvers; two grandchildren, Matthew Thomas and Sarah Jean Cognata and her husband, Kevin of Danvers.
Funeral service on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 12 p.m. in the Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, 01915. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held prior from 11 to 12 p.m. Burial will be private.
