Garry Michael's Story

Mr. Garry Michael O’Brien, 63, of Salem, beloved husband of Christine (Laberis) O’Brien, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Kaplan Family Hospice House, surrounded by family.
Born in Beverly, he was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Rhodes) O’Brien. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1972, where he excelled in basketball.
Garry was employed by Backer Hotwatt, formerly Hotwatt of Danvers, for over 20 years. He loved his job and made many friends over the years.
He loved watching football, especially the New England Patriots, never missing a game. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to one of his favorite places, Walt Disney World. He also enjoyed occasional trips to Foxwoods.
He was kindhearted and was always helping others. He had a soft spot in his heart for all animals, and he enjoyed his walks with his canine companions, Paige and Skippy. He was outgoing, funny and had a fantastic smile that would light up a room. He loved to laugh and loved to make others laugh. Garry was always optimistic and had a positive attitude and remained that way throughout his illness. He will be remembered for his kind spirit, his dignity in all situations, and his love for his wife and family. He will be deeply missed.
Garry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Christine (Laberis) O’Brien of Salem; his brother, Thomas O’Brien and his wife, Jane of Windham, Maine; his sisters, Kathy Roberts of Newburyport and Karen Gagne of Beverly; his nephew, T.D. O’Brien of Chicago, Ill.; his stepmother, Marlene O’Brien of Beverly; his mother-in-law, Stasia Laberis of Peabody, with whom he shared a very special relationship; his sisters-in-law, Andrea Bean and her husband, Michael of Peabody and Susan Canty and her husband, Jay of Salem; his brothers-in-law, Stephen Laberis of Salem, George Laberis and his wife, Pamela of Burlington, William Laberis and his wife, Janice of Falmouth; his close friends, David and Kathie “Katie” St. Pierre of Peabody and his beloved canine companions, Paige and Skippy. He was the son-in-law of the late Marino Laberis. Garry is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
His funeral service will be held in The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq. (at Salem Common), Salem, Thursday, September 28, at 7:15 p.m. Relatives and friends invited.
