Frank A.'s Story

Mr. Frank A. Nerden, born April 27, 1922, departed this life June 12, 2017.
The loving husband of Hope L. (Damory) Nerden (d. April 4, 2017), Frank passed away to be with his dear wife whom he loved and missed so much. They had been married for 72 years and were residents of Danvers, living at the same address for 65 years. Their home had been a gathering place for friends and family because of the warmth, love, compassion and friendship which he and Hope had always given so generously. He will be deeply missed but we are all the richer for having had Frank and Hope in our lives.
Frank served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II and remembers most vividly the time he spent building an airfield on New Guinea and his R&R in Australia where he met a wonderful family with whom he has continued to keep in contact even to recent communications.
Almost from the time of his discharge from the Army, Frank went to work for the General Electric in Lynn and worked there until his retirement in 1985. Having worked in the ‘gear plant’ for most of those years, he ended his career of a highly skilled machinist as ‘General All-Round Machinist’ capable of doing any job in the plant. Whenever there may have been a strike at GE, Frank would always find temporary work elsewhere. His sense of duty to family far outweighing his sense of pride at such times.
Frank and Hope loved to travel and would pack up the kids at short notice and head out on the road on camping trips or to Cape Breton, the Gaspe Peninsula, or a road trip to California and the American Southwest. It didn’t matter where as long as they were seeing new places in their adventures.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ruth Nerden; his brother Robert Nerden of Bradenton, Fla.; and his sister, Peggy Fahey of Saugus. Frank was the very proud and loving father of seven children, Timothy Nerden and his wife, Kathleen, Katherine Romig and her husband, Dean, the late Dennis Nerden, Michael Nerden and his wife, Susan, Kevin Nerden and his wife, Cynthia, Jamie Nerden and his fiancée, Dawn Darling, and Teresa Griffin and her husband, John. He was affectionately known as “Boompa” to his eight grandchildren, the late Timothy Nerden, Jr., Robert Nerden, Jennifer (Romig) Woods, Melissa (Romig) Leeds, Sara (Nerden) Strait, Shawn Nerden, Lauren Griffin, and Maggie Griffin; and to his seven great-grandchildren. He was loved and admired by his many nieces and nephews, and by so many dear friends.
Frank was a source of pride and admiration for all who knew him and was a fine example of which to aspire.
His funeral service will be held in the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St. (Route 62), Danvers, Friday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Visiting hours Thursday, April 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Frank’s memory to Operation Troop Support (a 501c23 organization) 16 Trinity St., Danvers, MA 01923 c/o Dick and Christine Moody. Their work was very close to Frank and Hope’s hearts having spent many hours preparing and packaging necessary items for our troops overseas.
