BEVERLY - Francis J. "Frank" Porter Jr., 93, beloved husband for 70 years of the late Dorothy Ann (Gehrig) Porter, died Tuesday, December 19, 2017, in Beverly.
Born in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Francis J. Sr. and Margaret M. (Jury) Porter. He graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, Long Island, N.Y., and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country from 1942 to 1946 as a Staff Sergeant during World War II and as a member of the United States Marine Corp. where he was part of the Marine Corp. Air Group which was deployed to Guam.
Mr. Porter was a professional licensed engineer in both Massachusetts and New York and had been employed for 34 years as a mechanical design engineer for the General Electric Company in Lynn and Wilmington until the time of his retirement in 1987. At GE, among many projects he was involved with, Frank was part of design teams that developed fuel cells for the Gemini and Apollo space flights and instrument panels/landing gear for Boeing 757, 767 aircrafts. He continued his work following his retirement at the Ledgewood Rehab. and Skilled Nursing Center and Appleseed's in Beverly until his final retirement at the age of 87. Frank, well into his 80s, enjoyed snow and water skiing, hunting, fishing, golf, jogging, cribbage play and was a longtime member of the Beverly YMCA. He and "Dottie" traveled often with family and friends during retirement years throughout the states and all over the world including Ireland, Denmark, England, Canada, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Caribbean and Hawaii.
A longtime resident of the City of Beverly for more than 60 years, he was an usher for many years at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Beverly. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Vittori-Rocci Post #56 in Beverly. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Frank was grateful for all the great neighbors and friends who stayed close and assisted he and Dottie in their final years living at home.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathie Ballou and her husband, Jon of Beverly; three sons, Francis J. Porter III and his wife, Nancy of Millis, Stephen Porter and his wife, Judith of Naples, Fla., and Timothy Porter Sr. and his wife, Loretta of Stoughton; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Collins and her husband, Neil of Bristow, Va.; three brothers, Robert H. Porter and his wife, Lillian of Naples, Fla., and Fairfield, Conn., Vincent Porter and the late Maryanne (Mae) Porter of Hanover, Pa., Raymond Porter of Northport, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Donald and sister-in-law, Amy Porter of Smithtown, N.Y.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Beverly.
