Elena A. (Velardo)'s Story
Elena A. (Velardo) Sokol, 93 of Salem, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, November 27, 2017. She was the devoted wife of the late Matthew J. Sokol, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.
Born in East Boston and raised in South Barre, she was the daughter of the late Concetto and Maria (Gangemi) Velardo. She was a graduate of Barre High School Class of ’41. Following her marriage the couple settled in Worcester for a number of years and moved to Salem in 1959. Elena was employed in the offices at Sears in Peabody, first in the credit department and later in auditing. She retired from Sears in 1987 following 23 years with the company.
Elena enjoyed all her time traveling and dancing with her late husband. Following his passing in 1997, she took daytrips to Red Sox games and various concerts. She also attended activities at the Salem Council on Aging and was a member of the Friends of the Salem Council on Aging and Salem Chapter of the AARP. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish and at one time volunteered at their Thrift Shop.
She is survived by her son, Joseph M. Sokol and his fiancée, Wendy Kearns of Alton Bay, N.H.; and daughter Mary C. Sokol and her boyfriend, Bruce Lillie of East Weymouth as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph and sister, Mary.
Relative and friends are invited to her calling hours at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Route 114/1-A] Salem on Friday, December 1, 2017, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., to be followed by her Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
