Eleanor (McCarthy)'s Story
Mrs. Eleanor (McCarthy) Johnson, 93, of Salem, beloved wife of the late Arthur Johnson, died peacefully September 16, 2017, at Rosewood Nursing and Rehab Center in Peabody.
Born in Middleton to Alice McCarthy, she was raised and educated in Salem and attended the Charlton School, the Phillips School and was a graduate of Salem High School. Eleanor resided the majority of her life in Salem.
Eleanor began her professional career with the former Woolworths Five and Dime Store. She then worked at Singer Sewing Machine Corporation for over 15 years. She matriculated to Massachusetts Electric Company where she was employed for many years and where she met her beloved husband, the late Arthur Johnson. They were married on September 12, 1964 and spent many happy years together as best friends and husband and wife.
Eleanor was a sweet and gentle woman whose foundation was her faith in God. She was an active parishioner throughout her whole life at the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem where she volunteered with generosity at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop for over 20 years and was a daily communicant.
Eleanor is survived by her cherished sister, Margery “Midge” Anderson and her dear nephew, John Michael Anderson, both of Salem; her sister-in-law, Mary Gunning; as well as her faithful friend and caregiver, Dot Tracy; and many cousins, neighbors and church friends who loved her very much.
Her funeral will be held from The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq. (at Salem Common), Salem, Thursday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. followed by her funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem at 11 a.m. with her cousin, Rev. Stephen B. Rock, presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Eleanor’s name to the St. Vincent De Paul Society of the Salem Catholic Collaborative, 28 St. Peter St., Salem, MA 01970.
