Danvers - Mrs. Eleanor Mae (Gilford) Buker, daughter of Leroy Alton Gilford and Bertha (Pead) Gilford, died on Aug. 12, 2019, at Lahey Hospital in Burlington, MA at the age of 99.
Born at home on July 20, 1920, a sixth generation native of Danvers, she graduated as salutatorian of her class from Holten High School and then from Hawthorne Institute in accounting.
In World War II Eleanor enlisted in the United States Coast Guard SPARS serving in the research department at headquarters in Washington, D.C., sang in their chorus, and was honorably discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Returning to Danvers she lived with the family of her sister Marion and was married at their home to Melvin W. Buker on Nov. 15, 1946. The couple moved to Essex, MA, and had a daughter and a son.
The family later moved to Danvers and were members of Maple Street Congregational Church, participating in many of the church's organizations and where she served as a deaconess. She took an active role in her children's activities, serving as a Girl Scout leader and attending innumerable sports events and musical performances. When her children were older, Eleanor worked at Suburban Quality Shop in Danvers and later was for many years' manager of The Loft, the church's thrift shop in Danversport.
In retirement, she traveled through the Danvers Senior Center trips and participated in many of their other activities. She also volunteered at the Northshore Music Theater where she enjoyed seeing numerous performances in the course of fulfilling her duties. Eleanor enjoyed a variety of needlework, music, word puzzles, games, and gardening.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Diane M. Hirtle (Richard) of Florence, MA, her son, William L. Buker (Dara-Lynn) of Cambridge, MA, her grandsons, James (Jennifer) Hirtle of Glenville Center, NY, and David (Kelly) Hirtle of Brewer, ME, great-grandsons, Matthew and Braeden, a special niece, Cynthia M. Furman of Shirley, MA, and a number of additional nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Frances Gilford and Marion Conant, her brother, Kenneth Gilford, and her former husband.

Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service which will be held in the McElroy Chapel of the Maple Street Congregational Church, Maple St., Danvers, Saturday, August 24, at 2 p.m. Burial in Hotlen Burial Grounds, Danvers, is private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St. (Route 62), Danvers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are invited to the 175th Anniversary Fund of Maple Street Congregational Church, 90 Maple St., Danvers, MA 01923.
