Eleanor M. (Conlin)'s Story

Text size

Eleanor M. Conlin Conte passed away at the age of 98 at her longtime home in Beverly Farms surrounded by family.
Born in Salem, Mass., on December 5, 1918, Eleanor was the daughter of Margaret Bresnahan Conlin and James Austin Conlin. Eleanor enjoyed a wonderful childhood in Salem, the oldest of five children in a loving home shared with her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and four cousins. In a family that never owned a telephone or automobile, her young life was abundant in simple, yet beautiful memories: swims at Forest River, trips to Salem Willows, rides hitched on “pung” sleighs, bonfires at Gallows Hill, and ten-cent picture shows at the old Paramount. After graduating from Salem High School, she got a job at the Salem Bleachery, which she proudly remembered for both the hard work and the camaraderie shared - values she would maintain throughout her life. When she lost her mother at the age of 18, Eleanor continued working and played a significant role in caring for her siblings.

Eleanor married Anthony V. Conte of Beverly in 1931 and shared 65 years of marriage until his death in 1996. Together they raised four children, Fran, Tony, Joyce, and Cheryl, proud to have given them opportunities they never had. While Anthony served in WWII, Eleanor took care of the family on the homefront, filling their lives with strength, care, joy - and a kitchen filled with wonderful cooking!
In later years, Eleanor and her husband enjoyed attending Navy Reunions throughout the United States and traveled to Ireland and Italy to locate their ancestral homes and connect with extended family. Proud of her Irish heritage, Eleanor returned to Ireland eight times with her children and grandchildren, most recently at the age of 91. She loved spending vacations with her children and grandchildren, from picnics at Lynch Park to Canadian and European adventures.

Eleanor was a woman of deep faith, attending St. James in younger years and St. Margaret’s for the past 56. She delighted in entertaining family and friends with home cooked meals and stories of “the good old days.” Eleanor was an accomplished knitter, avid reader, and could seldom be found without a cup of tea in hand.
Eleanor is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony V. and Susan Conte; daughter, Joyce Hill; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Robert Cropley, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen McShane Conte; seven grandchildren, Christopher Conte, Clare Conte, Brendan Conte, Ciaran Conte, Fiona Conte, Elizabeth Neri and husband Antonio Neri, and Meredith Hill; one great granddaughter, Willa Neri; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony V. Conte, her son Francis J. Conte, and her siblings Gladys Herlihy, Virginia Conlin, Earl Conlin, and Dorothy Poitras.

Eleanor will always be remembered for her kind, loving spirit and her shining smile.
