Donald J.'s Story
Mr. Donald J. Burke, age 80 of Lynn, died Wednesday in a local nursing home after a lengthy illness.
Raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Thomas) Burke. He was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1955 and attended Merrimack College and Northeastern University. He had lived in Lynn for the greater part of his life.
Don served in the United States Army National Guard for eight years from 1954-1962. He worked at Salem Hospital for 38 years, from 1970-2008, first as a Materials Manager, then after his retirement as a part time greeter in the Emergency Department for 10 years. Prior to that, he had worked for Rust Craft Greeting Cards. An avid golfer and bowler, Don was a member of the Valley Rats golf team at Gannon Golf Course in Lynn, and was also a Lucky Strike bowler.
He is survived by his dear friend and longtime companion, Mary Martel and her family of Peabody; as well as his son-in-law, John Abramo of Melrose, and several close friends. He was the father of the late Kathleen Abramo and brother of the late Thomas Burke.
His funeral will be held on Monday at 9 a.m, from the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody.
