Beverly - Detective Joshua R. Pickett, 42, beloved husband of Nancy J. (Robinson) Pickett, died unexpectedly on September 7, 2019.
He was born in Lynn to Peter Pickett and the late Sharon Crowder.
Joshua honorably served his country for more than eight years in the United States Army and Army National Guard branch as a Sergeant. He also served in the U.S. Navy for 9+ years, having worked in the Navy Seals Unit. He was stationed on the USS Vincennes in Bahrain and lived for a time in Japan. He fearlessly served in eminent danger areas including deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and relief efforts in support of Hurricane Katrina. His many awards and decorations include; Award of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Award of the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, The Army and Navy Good Conduct Medals, and the MA Defense Expeditionary Award.
Following his military service Mr. Pickett was appointed to the Beverly Police Department where he was employed as a Detective. He began his 12-year career with the department in 2007 as a Reserve Officer and became a full-time Officer in 2008. He worked his way up the ranks between military deployments and was also a student at Salem State University working toward a degree in Criminal Justice. Always actively involved, he served as former President and Vice President of the Beverly Police Officers Union.
Joshua was a dedicated husband and father; his wife and children were his world. He enjoyed camping and the great outdoors and was a natural survivalist. Josh loved sharing stories about his annual camping and hiking trips he adventured on with his father and son Josiah, roughing it in the deep woods. In his younger years he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts. He was an extremely kind and caring man, respected by friends, family, community and colleagues, a truly genuine person always willing to help anyone in need.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are two sons; Josiah and Wyatt Pickett; two daughters, Delaney and Evangeline Pickett; his father, Peter Pickett and his significant other Muriel Snow of Beverly; two brothers; Andrew Ellis of NH and Matthew Ellis of New Mexico; a sister, Rebecca Bousquin Larson of TN; two step-sisters, Nicole Ventura of Danvers and Jennifer Stoney of Salem; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, David Pickett and his mother, Sharon Crowder.
His funeral service will be held at Church of the Nazarene 556 Cabot Street, Beverly on Wednesday September 18, 2019 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Josh, I will never forget how you made me and all the rest of us in Charlie Company laugh. I remember how much fun it was beating the (so-called) "professional" team at the Asian Boat Race in Lowell. I can still see you banging on that enormous drum and offering your colorful words of encouragement as we all paddled that day...

Thank you for the memories Pickett. You and your family are in my prayers.
