Basil "Bill" Yankopoulos

May 31, 1937 - July 11, 2017

Basil Yankopoulos “Bill”, 80, of Peabody, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, July 11. He was the husband of Aspasia “Bunny” (Sarellis) Yankopoulos with whom he shared fifty-one years of marriage, and the father of Maria-Victoria (Marckx) and Mark.
Basil was born in Fall River, on May 31, 1937, the son of the late Theologos and Victoria (Petropoulos) Yankopoulos. He graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, and later attended Marietta College in Ohio, Boston University, and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving overseas in Germany before leaving the Army in 1964 to begin a career in scientific research. For most of his career he was a polymer research chemist for Amicon Corporation of Danvers. After retiring, Basil became a founding partner of Orbital Biosciences. His lifelong creativity led to the invention of several membranes and filtration devices, and his legacy lives on in the current Amicon Ultra made with the Ultracel membrane, the current iteration of Basil’s invention, the YM. Basil was an active member and a past president of the Parish Council at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody, where he was actively involved in the St. Stephen’s Ministry. He had an avid curiosity about everything, which he satisfied by reading and research. He loved cameras and photography, often developing his pictures in his home darkroom. He was a life member of the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club. One of his main loves was cooking and creating special recipes for his friends and family. Basil loved to travel to visit his family around the world, and be visited by friends and family in his home. He was loved by all, from the smallest children to whom he was “Theo Bill” or “Papou” (grandfather), to the elderly shut-ins who said they loved his visits because he made them laugh. Whether his friends were young or old, Basil entered into their interests with great enthusiasm. He is survived by his wife, Bunny of Peabody, a son Mark Yankopoulos, also of Peabody, a daughter and son-in-law, Maria-Victoria Marckx and her husband, Xenios of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; a sister, Yolande Elenidis of Greenburgh, New York; a sister-in-law, Judith Yankopoulos of Buzzard’s Bay, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Constantine “Gus” Yankopoulos and a sister, Ioanna, who died in infancy. He was the brother-in-law of the late Philip Elenidis and uncle to the late James Elenidis.
A viewing will be held on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn Street, Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Monday, July 17, at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody MA 01960 in his memory. For guest book and directions, please visit
