SALEM - Mrs. Barbara E. (Duffy) Szymanski, 82, of Salem, beloved wife of Joseph Szymanski with whom she shared 59 years of marriage, passed from this life on Sunday, January 28, 2018 after a life well lived.
Born in Providence, R.I., to the late John and Marian (Porter) Duffy. She was raised in Johnston, RI and was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy of the Visitation in Providence, Class of 1953. Barbara moved to Cambridge at the time of her marriage and was employed at General Radio of Cambridge/ West Concord and Lyman Laboratory at Harvard University until her first child was born. The family moved to Salem in 1968. Over the years, Barbara was employed as a Special Education aide at Salem High School and later worked for John Flynn & Sons of Salem until it's closing in 1989. She then spent the next 11years as the Recertification Manager for the Salem Housing Authority.
The family became active parishioners of the Immaculate Conception Parish, where Barbara was a faithful communicant, taught CCD and served as Eucharistic Minister to homebound parishioners for many years. She was also involved with many community organizations which include the Girl Scouts and the Ladies of the AOH. For many years, she along with her husband, represented the Immaculate Conception Parish volunteering monthly, as cooks, at My Brother's Table in Lynn. Both she and her husband also served on the Triad Council at the Salem Council on Aging, she as secretary and he as chairperson. Barbara was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Surviving Barbara in addition to her husband Joseph Szymanski of Salem are her three wonderful daughters, Maria Yonika and her husband, Bruce of Enfield, CT, Lisa Ackerman and her husband, Douglas of Uxbridge and Kristina Karolides and her husband Peter of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her six grandchildren, Elise and Leah Yonika, Stephen and Bethany Ackerman and Dillion and Matthew Karolides. She is also survived by four nieces, Diane Boisvert, Carrie Beers, Kathryn Tente and Deirdre Holland and their families, her aunt, Lorraine Porter and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, John Duffy, sister-in-law, Helen Duffy and her dear niece and Godchild, Beverley Duffy Carter.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from The O'Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq. (at Salem Common) Salem on Saturday, February 3rd at 9 a.m. followed by her funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial will be private in Rhode Island.
