Barbara R.'s Story
Barbara R. Holden, 96, of Peabody died Saturday, November 4, at the Kaplan Estates in Peabody. A lifelong resident of Peabody, she was born on February 10, 1921, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Rose (Wolloff) Holden. She graduated from Peabody High School in 1938 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Colby College in 1942. She later earned her Master’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1947 and subsequently studied in France at Strasbourg University.
Barbara taught advanced classes in French at Malden High School for 20 years before she was appointed head of the foreign languages department at Winchester High School, a position in which she served for 22 years, before retiring in 1982. She enjoyed traveling, reading and doing genealogy tracing her family beginnings. She is survived by her three generations of 47 descendants, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews of the Holden family. She was predeceased by her siblings, E. Gertrude Masterson, Florence A. Holden, Arthur Holden, Harold Holden and Charles Ralph Holden.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., with Rev. Leslie Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
