Barbara (Luff)'s Story
Ipswich - Mrs. Barbara (Luff) McCraine, 93, of Ipswich, beloved wife of the late Thomas McCraine with whom she shared 52 ½ years of marriage, died Sunday May 20, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Huntington, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Helen and Leroy W. Luff. She attended grade school in Huntington and then Staten Island, New York. She graduated from New Dorp High School where she was active in the Glee Club, Photography Club, and Yearbook. She continued her education at New Jersey College for Women (now Douglas College) where she played field hockey, graduating in 1947. She earned her college degree modeling for John Robert Powers, in New York City, after attending his modeling school and became one of his top models, at that time. After graduating from college she left modeling and worked as a Social Worker for Children’s Services in N.J.
An avid gardener, Barbara had a lifelong interest in gardening and belonged to the Pines Lake Garden Club in N.J. and the Boxford Village Garden Club where she was made an honorary member. She was also a member of the Doylestown Nature Club while living in Pa. During her time in Doylestown she worked as a realtor enjoying the homes and gardens, as part of that job.
An entertainer at heart, Barbara had a passion for singing and continued to sing throughout her life. She was active in the college choir and also a member of an acapella harmony group. While living at Pines Lake she sang with the Ramapo Valley Chorus of Sweet Adeline’s.
Barbara was dedicated to her family and her community, she spent countless hours volunteering throughout her life starting in college, visiting nursing homes and entertaining service men in a nearby hospital. She continued serving in the various communities she lived; she was a Pink Lady at Chilton Memorial Hospital and a driver for the American Cancer Society. She was an active member of First Church Boxford, Congregational, where she cooked, made prayer shawls and helped whenever there was a need. She was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter P of Marblehead, where they made donations to support women in need. Barbara’s favorite times were spent with her family and friends, she will be deeply missed.
Barbara is survived by her sons, Thomas McCraine and his wife Faris Bennett of West Newbury, and Daniel McCraine and his wife Susan of Boxford; seven grandchildren, Jared McCraine, Aaron McCraine, Samantha McCraine, Georgia Bennett, Tori Bermudez and her husband Marcus, Shannon McCraine, and Jaclyn McCraine; her great-grandchildren, Ava and Dominic Bermudez; her sister Jocelyn Barth of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. She was also sister-in-law to the late Moira McCraine Roberts.
Her funeral service will be in First Church Boxford, Congregational, 4 Georgetown Rd., Boxford, on Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Village Cemetery, Boxford.
