Barbara A. (DeLong)'s Story
Mrs. Barbara A. (DeLong) Hawkes, 92, of Brooksby Village Peabody, formerly of Marblehead, beloved wife of the late William Hawkes, died peacefully Saturday, Sept 9, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward S. DeLong and Eva Aline (Gantert) Gallager. She was raised and educated outside of Philadelphia and was a graduate of Ambler High School. She continued her education, and attended one-year at Beaver College.
Mrs. Hawkes had been associated with Grace Church and the Episcopal Archdiocese of Boston for many years as an Administrative Assistant until the time of her retirement. In retirement, she focused on one of her passions, gardening and more specifically Herbs. She founded Old Hill Herbs, a home-based business specializing in herbs, plants, culinary blends, and other herbal home goods. She found immense pride and success doing what she loved.
Babs moved to Marblehead in 1949, she fell in love with the town and then with a Marbleheader, Bill, her best friend and the love of her life. In addition to gardening Babs also fell in love with the sea. Bill and she spent many summers on their boat, the Sea Hawk, motoring around the North Shore coast and surrounding Islands. She had a deep passion for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which she held season tickets for many years. After moving to Brooksby Village, she enjoyed spending time with friends, old and new, and never turned down an invitation to join family or friends for dinner.
Religious Faith always played a significant role in Babs life. She was a longtime dedicated member of Grace Episcopal Church in Salem, where she found great love, strength and fellowship through her Grace Church Family. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
