Alice M. (Foley)'s Story

Alice M. (Foley) Hourihan, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 14, 2017, at the Hathorne Hill Skilled Nursing & Rehab Facility in Danvers following an extended illness, while in the comforting presence of her loving children by her side.
Born in Salem, she was the only daughter of the late Joseph J. and Alice M. (Cronin) Foley. Alice graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1940, then attended Salem Vocational School.
Mrs. Hourihan worked for the rationing board in Salem during World War II. After the war, she went to work for the Veterans Administration in Boston where she met her first husband Felix Tavano. They were married in June, 1946, until his passing on July 14, 1948, and she returned to work at the V.A.
Alice met her second husband, Joseph Hourihan, commuting home from Boston on the B & M Railroad. They square danced many years with the Riverside Squares in Danvers. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage prior to Joe’s passing in 2000.
She leaves her daughter, Rose Tavano of Swampscott and her son, Joe Hourihan and his partner, Bettie Waters Jervah of Peabody.
On behalf of the Hourihan family, “We want to thank all the nurses and CNA’s from Hathorne Hill for the wonderful care they gave our mother. Also, special thanks to the people from Compassus Hospice who cared for our mother at the end of her life.”
A private family funeral service was held with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Salem.
